FROM RENO, NEVADA:

Take Highway 395 North approximately 75 miles until it intersects with Highway 36 South of Susanville. At this point Highway 395 continues to Alturas. Continue straight on the main roadway now Highway 36 into Susanville. Follow Main Street to the stoplight at the foot of the hill below Historic Uptown Susanville. Turn left on Weatherlow Street (which becomes Richmond Road) and drive 1/2 mile across Susan River, continuing on Richmond Road to the Susanville Railroad Depot Visitor Center, Museum and Trailhead.  At North Railroad Avenue, turn left, then right into the visitor center where you will find ample day-use parking.  Additional day-use parking is available directly opposite the Depot and adjacent to the caboose.

FROM LASSEN VOLCANIC NATIONAL PARK: Take Highway 36 east to Westwood or Susanville. The trail is accessible from either location and connects both towns.

WESTWOOD: There are two options:  The first option begin at the intersection of Highway 36 and County Road A-21.  From this point travel one mile south into Westwood.  Park at the Bizz Johnson Trail kiosk in front of the Westwood Community Center and next to the Paul Bunyan statue.  Begin your ride from this point.  (Note: food and fuel are available in Westwood.)  The trail is accessible by following A21 back through town, retracing the way you came. Cross Highway 36 and continue on A-21 three miles to County Road 101 (just before the railroad tracks). Turn right and follow County Road 101 for 1/2 mile to Mason Station Trailhead. Ride through the trailhead and follow the path past kiosk 1/4 mile to the abandoned railroad grade. Follow the railroad grade 25 miles to Susanville. 

The second option is to travel north on County Road A-21, from where it intersects with Highway 36, for three miles to County Road 101.  Watch for the Mason Station sign.  Follow County Road 101 for 1/2 mile to Mason Station Trailhead.  Ride through trailhead and follow the path past a kiosk for 1/4 mile to abandoned railroad grade.  Follow the railroad grade 25 miles to Susanville. 

Note: Between Westwood and Westwood Junction there is approximately 500 feet of elevation gain in approximately 12 miles (7.5 miles on abandoned railroad grade, 4.5 miles on county roads).  From Westwood Junction to Susanville, the trail descends approximately 1,300 feet in elevation over approximately 18 miles.)  Along the entire trail no grade exceeds 3% (3 feet of rise or fall in 100 feet of length.)

NOTE: (To avoid riding on the roads, drive directly to parking area at Mason Station Trailhead.)

 

SUSANVILLE:    From westerly points (Interstate 5, Highway 32 or Highway 44, access Highway 36, which becomes Main Street in Susanville. Continue on Main Street through Historic Uptown Susanville to the first stoplight at the base of the hill. At this intersection turn right on Weatherlow Street (which becomes Richmond Road) and continue 1/2 mile to Susanville Railroad Depot Trailhead Visitor Center. The Bizz Johnson Trail officially begins at the Depot.

You may also access the trailhead for the Bizz Johnson Trail from Devil's Corral off Highway 36, about seven miles west of Susanville.

The primitive campground and Goumaz Trailhead at the midpoint of the trail can be reached by Forest Service gravel roads that leave Highway 44. Follow Highway 36 west from Susanville to Highway 44, then seven miles west on Highway 44 to the gravel roads. Follow signs to Goumaz.
